Some find it hard to believe that we lack a large selection of country rentals. That’s also not to say we don’t have any. We do. Balancing the demands of the typical Ohio University student versus the non traditional student proves difficult with rural housing. Most of these traditional students living at the Athens campus look for housing as close to campus as possible. This means that the places requiring a small commute or drive will not appeal to the masses. Therefore, the on campus selection tends to rent long before the country counterparts. This doesn’t mean that people don’t want to live in the country. Rather, we are dealing with city slickers, mostly.

Like we stated above, the few people looking for country rentals have quite a selection to choose from. Athens is a small town surrounded by the country foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. For this reason alone you will find lots of places in the sticks. Now, will those places live up to your standards will be a more pressing question. Down here, many people live without common creature comforts you can easily find in the city. This includes wood heat, no internet, driving through a creek to get home, limited places to shop, and many others.
City Slickers
Ain’t nothing wrong with the city slickers. They play an important role in our local society. The local city slickers have also come to understand and even help the locals living in the country rentals. They have many friends and family in those very same places. Some of the out of town city slickers seem to require a little more time to embrace the country folk. And that is just fine. We all need to realize and also celebrate our differences.
