Chile is a long, skinny country. It is in South America. The Pacific Ocean is along Chile’s coastline. Also, the Arctic Ocean borders Chile to the South. The capital and largest city is Santiago. In the 1800’s Chile’s economy and territory also grew a lot. In 1973, the leader of the country was overthrown. A dictator replaced him. In 1520, Ferdinand Magellan found the passage that is named after him. He was the first European to set foot in Chile. Other Spanish people came from Peru in search of gold. The people of the area at that time hunted. They also had agriculture. The Spanish did not find the gold and silver that they were looking for in Chile. However, they saw all of the beautiful land that was perfect for agriculture. This also made Spain add Chile to its empire. Find yourself some awesome Off Campus Housing.

In 1808, Napoleon made his brother King of Spain. This also made Chile want to separate from the Empire. In February of 1818 Chile was recognized as independent from Spain. In 1891, there was a civil war in Chile that changed the balance of power. After this, Chile and Argentina had an expensive naval arms race. Chile has two house of Congress. One house has 43 seats. The other house has 155 seats. Chile and Argentina have had a number of border disputes. They have also had border disputes with Peru. Chile is rich in minerals and metals. Argentina and Peru felt they deserved some of the minerals.

The Chilean Air Force also has 12, 500 members. The Chilean Army also has 45,000 members. This seems very small compared to the United States. The national bird of Chile is the Andean Condor. Two thirds of Chile is Roman Catholic. Church and State are also separate in Chile.
